Message from the Secretary
Welcome to the Start Seeing Motorcycles’
website. Many of you have seen the 30-foot bright yellow
banners in communities throughout the state displaying the
“Start Seeing Motorcycles” message. This successful campaign
has been instrumental in alerting the motoring public that,
with warm weather, motorcycles are back on our highways.
This website highlights the many opportunities the Illinois
Department of Transportation’s Division of Traffic Safety
offers to motorcycle riders throughout our state. The many
links on this site offer information on the free training
courses offered at four Illinois universities, as well as,
job opportunities and various programs that are geared
specifically at keeping motorcyclists safe on our roadways.
In 2008, there were 135 motorcycle fatalities in Illinois.
That is far too many and our hope is that through the
resources available on this website, you will receive the
training and information needed to make your cycling
experiences safer, more pleasurable and help us reduce
fatalities and injuries.
If you have questions or comments, please feel free to
contact the Division of Traffic Safety at
contact@startseeingmotorcycles.org.
Have a safe summer.
