Safety Tips for Motorcycles
Share the Road
Of all motor vehicles, motorcycles are the most
vulnerable on our roadways. Because motorcycles do not have
safety belts, riders can be thrown off the bike in a crash
resulting in serious injury or event death. Hitting a truck
is like hitting a steel wall. However, your chance for
survival will be increased by wearing a helmet and following
the safety tips listed below.
WATCH THE NO-ZONES
Trucks have large blind spots or “no zones” on both
sides, the front and behind the vehicle. It is extremely
difficult for drivers to see motorcycles in these areas
especially in the front of the truck. Always remember,
because of their size, it takes much longer for a truck to
stop than a lighter weight, faster braking motorcycle. To
avoid crashes, never hang out in the “no zones”.

DRIVE TO SURVIVE
Motorcycles, the smallest vehicles on the roadways,
unfortunately provide no protection in the event of a
crash. Because other drivers may not see a motorcycle,
riders must use extra caution and be aware of everything
on the roadways. Pay close attention to the signals and
brake lights of other vehicles, especially trucks. Always
be prepared in the event that the other vehicle’s signals
or lights do not work--never tailgate. Remember to always
ride with caution, drive defensively and always obey the
laws of the road. Never ride in between lanes, share a
lane with another vehicle or drive aggressively. These
types of riding behavior increase your chance of a crash
and serious injury.
CHECK YOURSELF AND YOUR BIKE
Before each ride, conduct a safety inspection of your
motorcycle. Proper maintenance is essential even for short
trips. Always wear high visibility protective clothing
including helmet, gloves, boots and jacket. These tips
will help reduce crashes and serious injury.

WATCH YOUR SPEED
Remember, of all motor vehicles, motorcycles accelerate
the fastest while trucks and buses are the slowest. Always
watch your speed.
